——Ms. Marquardt,

——Aaliyah Cao,G9

——Isaac Loeppky, G6

Liaising with other 50 international school libraries around the world, OCAC libraries are pleased to announce the start of the Panda Book Awards programme for 2021/2022. The purpose of this programme is aiming to expose our students to a variety of children’s authors and get them to try out new genres of fiction.

This programme provides our students with a diverse reading adventure and encourages young people to read quality books carefully selected by school librarians from international schools. There are different categories which cater to different age level. Each category consists of about ten titles. Students reading the Panda books will be invited to vote for their favourite Panda book after Chinese New Year. The books which receive the most votes, will win the award of this year. And the winning authors will be contacted and be sent with their Panda Award Winner scroll from the Panda Book Steering Committee in China.

“The panda was chosen as the program’s mascot as it holds a special place in the hearts of the Chinese people and is a symbol of peace and a token of forging friendly ties” (The Panda Book Steering Committee).

Since last month, our OCAC librarians have started to promote the Panda books through reading activities. Secondary library and Primary library encourage students to read as many Panda books as possible by organizing a Panda reading card activity. In Early Years, our librarians Ms. Hong and Mr. Hart lead Panda book read-aloud sessions in the library.

Panda Books Posters, created by Ms.Tian, Mr. Zhou and Ms. Selenge,

A pile of Pwanda books is already in our libraries and ready to be checked out. Some Secondary teachers and students have started to read a panda book. Let’s look at what did they say about the book.

“I love a good haunted house story, because haunted house stories are actually about haunted people. Noemi Taboada receives a letter from her newly-wed cousin, pleading for a visit. When Noemi arrives, she finds a creepy house filled with a suspicious family; they distrust her and she distrusts them. The author, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, builds chilling clue upon chilling clue, before the house, the family, and all their secrets are revealed in a gripping conclusion.”

——Ms. Marquardt, Geography teacher in High School

“Home is not a country uses a unique form other than using paragraphs to tell the whole story. But using poets to present the protagonist's inner monologue. The use of stream of consciousness nicely builds up the main character Nima, who always feel strong connections with her home country even she has immigrated to the US when she was young. The book discussed many themes such as beliefs, bully, family and so on. But the most impressive one is the question all the way through the book --Where do we come from? The book has deeply discussed this question and I really recommend you to come and read this excellent book.”

—Catherine Han, G11

“A Place at the Tables teaches a lot about different cultures and let us understand how those that aren’t so much the same as us will feel when being treated differently.”

—Aaliyah Cao, G9

“The book I’ve read is The Mars Challenge. In this book, it talks about all of the difficulties for going to Mars and why we can’t go yet. After I read it, I learned lots about Mars and human’s space technology. Even though it is about all of these stuff, it is a graphic novel, which makes it very interesting.”

—Isaac Loeppky, G6

We look forward to receiving more reviews about the Panda books and we can’t wait for knowing which books will be the winners for this year!
