G9 students have just finished a summative assessment for the unit of linear function, linear graphs case of bivariate statistics. Student were required to write a math essay independently from real life situation where the temperature on each planet depend on how far the planets is from the sun.

Essay writing is one of the basic skills students must master during their IB study in a very early stage. Writing mathematics essays is the perfect opportunity for students to understand the knowledge and creatively apply what they have learned to a real-life context. It requires source processing, researching, stating hypotheses, calculating and verifying the hypotheses. The assignment prepares solid knowledge and skill foundation for students’ study in higher levels.

Before stepping into DP, students will have to complete their Personal Project as a conclusion to their MYP studies. The Personal Project is an opportunity for students to indulge a passion and demonstrate the skills that they have developed through approaches to learning. During her G10 year, this current G12 student chose the topic of the Golden Ratio in Suzhou gardens, which also contains a lot of Mathematics observations and calculations.

Through the process, the students can not only consolidate their learning, but also learning from other perspectives during collaboration. G10 – Math Presentation

We also emphasis students’ presentation skills. Some of our G10 students studied the axiomatic system, Geometry. Through a series of inquiries and investigations, students solve trigonometric functions, extend knowledge of characteristics of angles, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, explore practical applications, and explain their reasoning process from start to finish.

Except for IB MYP, BIS also offers AP Calculus in high school from G9. An AP course in calculus consists of a full high school academic year of work that is comparable to calculus courses in colleges and universities. Students who take an AP course in calculus will seek college credit, college placement, or both, from institutions of higher learning.
