Something big, bright, and blue has cropped up on our Pudong campus.
That's right. A brand new (GIGANTIC) playground.
"It took about four months for our new playground to be built, and it was fascinating to watch construction in real-time. From cranes to welding to the weaving of the ropes, it was magical for our students to see this process from beginning to end," says Sanna Erzinclioglu, elementary vice principal at SAS' Pudong campus. "We're calling it the Eagle Fortress. The fifth grade homerooms nominated four names for the new playground structure, and the rest of the elementary school voted."
The new updated playground came about from a need to accomodate our growing elementary enrollment, and a want to develop an outdoor learning area that could further our mission and learning goals of promoting creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and fun.
"One of our SAS schoolwide learning goals is to develop creative learners, and it is on the playground where students can engage in creative play. Creative play helps children develop problem-solving skills that require persistence and engagement," explains Sanna. "For example, students must decide who they're going to play with, what they're going to play, and what everyone's role will be in the game. Then they must execute their plan."
Playing outside during recess also gives students the opportunity to build social and emotional skills, like reading social cues, demonstrating empathy, handling disappointment, negotiating, advocating for self, and effectively socializing with peers. "Rather than being directed and organized by an adult, students learn social skills through real-life scenarios and play opportunities with their peers," continues Sanna. "And probably the most obvious, students gain physical input during recess that helps support their physical development. They learn how to regulate their growing and changing body, and calibrate to what they can and cannot yet do physically."
And psst, this is only the start. What we see on the playground right now is just phase one of a much larger, wider, more exciting development. SAS is planning to complete phase two of this project in the summer of 2022, so expect to see more additions made to this outdoor learning area when everyone comes back to school in fall!
