What’s the goal of all education

教育的终极目标是什么

The goal of education is to ensure every individual  achieve comprehensive and personalized development. Different from the traditional education system, a qualified international school especially American system, pays more attention to the all-round development of children. We expect students to become:

In Ningbo, there is an American international school which is strong in academics and strong in character, called  "Georgia School". The school implements the concept of "whole-child education" and develops the character and academic capacity of tomorrow's leaders.

As the head of Georgia School, Mr. Cavon said: "That education is both a science and an art". Now, let's explore in detail what is the true concept of American education。

Science of Education

教育是一门科学

The science of education can be found in multiple areas, including the fields of neuroscience, child psychology, and behavioral psychology. When studying the brain development of children, from early childhood age through adolescence, neuroscience research demonstrates that both the manner in which learning takes place, as well as a child’s capacity to retain new information, varies greatly across each of the developmental years.

教育作为一门科学,涉及包括神经科学、儿童心理学和行为心理学在内的多个领域。教书育人,在教授书本知识的同时,也需要教育者充分地了解儿童的心理、行为,每个孩子从幼儿园到高中,每个阶段的学习方式、记忆力、行为特征等存在很大的差异。

 

Hence, teachers must be well versed in the developmental stages and must be experts at specific grade levels or subject areas, approaching learning with the end result in mind at all times. 

乔治亚的老师,不仅学科知识等领域方面非常专业,而且会关注到孩子不同发展阶段的不同需求。我们的老师不仅开放、包容,尊重、接纳,同时非常了解学生各个发展阶段的特点,采用合适的方式、方法,让孩子们茁壮成长。

 

Student Centered Learning

以学生为中心

GSN utilizes this approach requires that students be given a multitude of learning pathways and numerous opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of a concept. Some examples are project-based learning, learning centered around the scientific method and the engineering design process, literature reviews, and cross-curricular activities.  

乔治亚学校就采用这种“以学生为中心”的学习方法,我们认为,每一个孩子都是独一无二的,每个孩子都可以在这里快乐学习和成长,我们提供丰富的学习资源、小班化的课堂,做到因材施教,挖掘每个学生的闪光点。在课堂上,学生们不仅听老师讲课,还参与小组讨论,进行观点的碰撞;团队设计ppt,上台合作演讲;完成科学实验和海报,在科学展中向全校师生介绍,等等。我们关注学业,同时也培养独立思考、协同合作、解决矛盾、演讲、设计等技能。

 

Further, to the point of education as a science - modern educational research demonstrates that students that feel respected, safe, and essentially “loved”, by their teachers and the school, are better able to retain knowledge gained and are better able to synthesize that knowledge, across content areas toward creative problem solving. Challenge and pressure are certainly essential for growth, but it is our belief that, for young people, these pressures must take place in a controlled, loving, environment in which students are permitted to develop resilience – the ability to make a mistake and to arise with added strength and understanding.

此外,研究表明,感受到安全、被保护、被老师和学校关爱的学生,能够更好地获得知识,将其综合运用,跨学科、创造性地解决问题。成长过程中总是遇到挑战和压力,我们相信,对年轻人来说,如果这些压力发生在一个可控的、充满爱的环境中,那么,我们就能发展学生的韧性——给予支持和理解,培养他们试错和修错的能力。

Here in our main hall, there is a quote from a prominent American educator that says/在我们的大厅里,展示着美国著名教育学家的一句名言:

At Georgia, this concept is incorporated into our school culture and permeates all that we do.  Our teachers are expected to be the “biggest fans” of our students while also their “harshest critics”. To accomplish this, is truly an “Art”.  It requires that teachers possess a high level of content knowledge as well as an understanding of each individual student. To further our Art, GSN utilizes the “Tribes Model” of communitydevelopment.

在乔治亚,“尊重”的理念融入了我们的校园文化,渗透到每个细节。我们的老师是学生的“头号粉丝”,也是 “严师” 。我们不仅师生关系紧密,但同时也会在师生关系之间达到一个平衡:达到“老师”和“粉丝”角色的平衡,这要求教师不仅拥有高超的学术能力,而且真正地做到关爱学生,理解学生。为了进一步强化 “教育的艺术”,乔治亚学校植入了Tribes品德发展项目,让来自不同国家和背景的人,能够快速地凝聚在一起,组成一个温暖的乔治亚大家庭。
